Cobra girl's latest plea rejected

Cobra girl's latest plea rejected by Ananda Weerasuriya Magistrate cum District Judge, Thilina Gamage, rejected a written request made by Attorney Rienzie Aresecularatne, President's Counsel, to the Fort Magistrates' Court, on behalf of his client, who had kept a cobra in her custody, allegedly under conditions considered non-conducive, not to sign the charge sheet filed by the Kollupitiya Police. The case was taken up for hearing yesterday (26). Nirosha Wimalaratne, or the 'cobra girl,' was arrested by the Kollupitiya Police on 28 August 2012, for possessing a cobra illegally at the Cleopatra Club,
Kollupitiya.

She was later released on bail after she was produced before the Fort Magistrate's Court, while she was under orders to release the snake to the Dehiwala Zoo. A report was presented by the officers at the Zoo, confirming that the cobra had been harassed, leading to a case being filed against the suspect. The argument by the lawyer for the accused was that, because the witnesses mentioned in the draft of the plaint were insufficient, prior to summoning the witnesses for the plaintiff, the charge sheet should not be signed. However, the Magistrate rejected the lawyer's claim and set the next date of trial as 7 November.
