Alagoduwa turns lethal

One person died and 100 others were admitted to hospitals following the consumption of alagoduwa (smaller species of tuna) in Muttur and Kinniya, in Trincomalee.


The medical authority of the Muttur Hospital, Dr. Prem Anan, said, 35 patients were admitted to the Muttur Hospital while 21 others are receiving outdoor treatment. A security officer of the hospital who had consumed this fish, had subsequently died.
However, as the deceased had some other ailments as well, the body had been sent to the Trincomalee Hospital for a post mortem examination, according to the Muttur Police.


Meanwhile, six persons from Kinniya, were admitted to the Kinniya Hospital while about 40 others are receiving outdoor treatment, the medical authority of the Kinniya Hospital, Dr. A. M. Sameem, disclosed. Sources from the hospital said there may be a larger number of patients taking treatment in private hospitals in addition to those who had sought treatment in the two State hospitals.
Doctors who are attending on the patients said the symptoms of the food poisoning included excessive perspiration, vomiting and diarrhoea.


Muttur Police said police officers are recording statements from the patients. They added that with the assistance of the Health Officer in charge of the division, measures are being taken to send a sample of the fish to the Medical Research Institute (MRI), Colombo, to ascertain what could have triggered the reaction from such a vast number of persons who had consumed the fish.


A team of inspectors from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) of the Fisheries Ministry, had also been sent to the area yesterday (26) morning, to conduct inquiries in this regard, the Chairman of NARA,
Dr. Sayura Samarasundara, said.
